The first scheduled international flight was performed 25 years ago on October 26th, 1992
It was the flight Kazan – Istanbul – Kazan, performed on an airplane of Tatarstan Airlines.
It is difficult to overestimate the importance of this event to the airport, as well as to our Republic in whole. By 1992 the airport had already separated from Tatar Civil Aviation Production Association and had become a standalone entity. It has given the wider room for independent manoeuvre towards routes development. Then, on October 26th the first scheduled international flight was carried out. It was the flight Kazan – Istanbul – Kazan, performed on airplane of Tatarstan Airlines.
It may be said that from that point on, the approach to operational performance has started to change and transition to market relations required focus on profits and financial results.
Authorities of the Republic of Tatarstan clearly saw that the economy of Tatarstan first of all would be improved by broader international engagements. It was hard to accomplish it without modern airport with top level equipment and capacity to accept a wide-body airliners of foreign manufacture without limits.
Therefore, the decision was made to initiate an overall renovation of the airport until 2005…but that is another story.
